Gender of Nouns

CEFR A1 (Beginner) · Week 6 · 25 questions

Every French noun is either masculine or feminine, and that gender shapes the articles, adjectives and pronouns around it. Some endings hint at gender (-tion is usually feminine, -age often masculine), but the safest habit is to learn each noun together with its article.

What you'll practise

  • Identify common masculine and feminine noun endings
  • Learn new nouns together with le or la
  • Predict gender from typical suffixes
  • Spot frequent exceptions to the usual patterns
